Transformers (Two-Disc Special Edition + BD Live) [Blu-ray]

Despite being created for the dying, dying, dead HD DVD format, my Transformers custom is easily among my most popular (and insulted) cover designs. In that regard, I get the tiniest of tastes as to what it must feel like to be Michael Bay. And it feels good.

Here the design is again, adapted for Blu-ray and with what I think are some small but significant improvements. I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Between The Proposition and The Road, director John Hillcoat is really beginning to corner the market on bleakness. What fantastic bleakness it is, though. Gritty and satisfying, The Proposition in particular is a heck of a movie. Hillcoat, writer Nick Cave, and a cast of always dependable actors like Ray Winstone, Guy Pearce, Danny Huston, and John Hurt (not to mention sole ray of sunshine Emily Watson) have created a film of great intensity and quality. If you can stomach it, this one is certainly worth a shot.

I hope you will feel the same way about this custom Blu-ray cover.

The Process: Szamanka (LE)

A long way removed from my initial preview of Szamanka (SE), Mondo Vision has finally officially announced both versions of the release for pre-order, even more feature-packed and lavishly designed than originally planned. For a look at what their Limited Edition release of Szamanka has in store…

The film is definitely growing on me; the cover I’ve loved from the start. Here is a Blu-ray adaptation (with a few improvements) of one of my favorite HD DVD customs. I hope you’ll enjoy this design for David Fincher’s Zodiac.

One of Hitchcock’s very best and the blueprint for my favorite of his works — North by NorthwestThe 39 Steps is the kind of wildly fantastic romantic action comedy thriller that Hollywood has been trying to recreate for decades.

In a rare instance for me, this cover utilizes a (digitally cleaned up and enhanced) poster, and an outstanding one at that. The most personally necessary of my custom designs, this was created to replace Criterion’s extremely dark official cover, whose artwork was barely visible (a crime for a film that shines so brightly!).  I hope you’ll enjoy it.

Magnificent

A friend of mine made the interesting observation that, in the classic Adventures of Superman, Clark Kent was as much of a hero as the Man of Steel himself. That idea of everyday heroism inspired this design, an everyday superhero costume of sorts celebrating the potential hero within us all.

Thank you to those who helped vote, this received a familiar 2.4.

It’s likely you haven’t heard of either The Long Goodbye or The Silent Partner, both starring Elliott Gould, both released in the 1970s, and both occupying my list of top ten favorite movies. What I appreciate with this film in particular is the cleverness of its lead character and how well that cleverness matches up against a startlingly vicious criminal played by Christopher Plummer. I struggle to think of a single moment where the characters’ actions seem unrealistic or ‘dumb’ given the circumstances. That kind of intelligence in a film is rare… but is perhaps lost on the ridiculous retail DVD cover.

At the risk of over-selling the film, here’s one final link for The Silent Partner.  If you have the opportunity to see it, by all means go for it.

Though admittedly not a fan of the movie (the cinematic works of Kermit the Frog are more my speed), I created this cover in a friendly challenge several years ago. The film itself is hugely popular, to the point of comfortably breaking the IMDB’s top 50, so hopefully there are a few visitors who might enjoy this.

In a rare instance, I will completely disagree with beloved film critic Roger Ebert, who unfavorably compared this film to Before the Devil Knows You’re Dead, which, on paper at least, shares a mildly similar plot. I found Cassandra’s Dream to be far superior, and quite different. For that matter, I would also edge it above Match Point and Vicky Cristina Barcelona, the two Woody Allen dramas released in surrounding years. This film and the fantastic In Bruges should have proven a one-two punch labeling Colin Farrell as a top actor, but these things don’t always work out.

Released even more quietly than the movie itself (truly an impressive feat), this cover is a real favorite that I hope will inspire one or two people to give a flawed but interesting film a shot.

Refusing to stay down for the count, I’m back with another t-shirt attempt, a completely new kind of beast (yet still in line with my design sensibilities). Proud though I may be of my other designs, this is certainly the most wearable yet. As always, my sincere thanks go out to those who helped with their votes. This one ended up at a familiar 2.45 out of 5.
